Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in Em, seen as a eulogy to the terrible losses in WW1, continues to be one of the most popular classical pieces ever. This complete recording of the full concert is conducted by Matthias Bamert and performed by renowned cellist Lynn Harrell with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Occasional Productions filmed the concert for inclusion in the documentary Elgar’s Enigma: Biography of a Concerto, which explores the theory that Elgar composed the cello concerto in part after hearing of the death of a young New Zealand soldier, son of his former fiancé, at the Somme. Given audience requests, and that we filmed the full concert, we have edited a version that is the cello concerto only.
